The Stanley Rodillians RUFC February Round Up

This season Stanley Rodillians RUFC has been celebrating its diamond anniversary, perhaps not quite in the way it wanted but none the less 60 years is a great achievement and we still look forward to holding and event when restrictions allow to commemorate this significant milestone in the clubs history.

The club came in to existence in the 1960-61 season,  Old scholars of Rodillian Grammar School got together and thought it a good idea to form their own Rugby club to continue and preserve the old traditions of the school, which had believed in sport and recreation as a contrast to tutorial studies, Old Rodillians Rugby Club was formed.

The club had originally played its games at the “rec” at Lofthouse, moving to Rothwell Haigh a year later, and then Lofthouse Cricket field for a couple of seasons. Some 10 years after is inaugural season, the club moved to its now long term home in Lee Moor Road in Stanley. With the above move recent years have seen the club change its name to suit its location to “Stanley‘’Rodillians RUFC. The club prides itself on its warm welcome and family atmosphere, and whilst the club continues to evolves this feeling stays the same and is integral to its being.

My first memories playing at the club are from the mid 80’s playing for the colts (under 18’s) side. I arrived with my pier group who were all part of the school rugby team at Rodillians school. Our teachers at the school having encouraged us to give it a go and the rest is history as they say.  With each passing year progression is into the senior teams and enjoying the friendships and social life that come with your involvement.

In recent years the links to Rodillian and other local schools has not been strong , but it is an area the club are looking to strengthen. The last few seasons has seen the re start of a Junior section and the hard work of the Junior coaching team led by Jordan Platt, Jonathan Stone and Emma King has been terrific to see. They have engaged with local schools and this has helped build a great platform for the clubs future (hopefully another 60  years and beyond !) and a fantastic environment for the kids, based on the 5 key behaviours of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship.

Whilst Rugby is at the heart of the club, Stanley Rodillians also plays host to others including The Rodillian Runners, Wakefield Owls Junior Football Club and Rothwell Temperance Brass Band. All groups will be looking to bounce back as restrictions are lifted , we would also love to be able to welcome and add other groups to this list .

We  look forward to meeting and sharing  our club with you in the near future, you can be assured of a warm welcome.
