Santa's Sleigh:
A very big thank you to everyone who supported Rothwell District Lions Club members whilst escorting Father Christmas, on his Sleigh, around the streets of Rothwell and surrounding areas.
This annual ritual was welcomed and enjoyed by kids of all ages.
WILD BOAR CHALLENGE IV
Rothwell District Lions Club's 4th Wild Boar Challenge was held on Sunday 14th October. Well over 200 riders from far & wide participated.
The CHALLENGE, which started and finished in Rothwell Country Park, is a 50km OFF ROAD sponsored cycle ride through parkland, woods, canal towpaths, cycle paths and the grounds of the magnificent Temple Newsam House.
Or, if 50km was a bit too serious, but you still wanted to take part (especially if you wanted to bring the little ones!!) the event also included a sponsored 15km fun challenge through parkland and along the canal towpath.
The results of the Wild Boar Challenge Raffle are: 1st Adult Mountain Bike: 489, 2nd £75: 1000 & 3rd £50: 370.
This year's beneficiaries are Martin House Hospice (http://www.martinhouse.org.uk) and Jane Tomlinsons Appeal (http://www.janesappeal.com)
All Hunslet Final
at the home of Hunslet Hawks.
Rothwell District Lions Club held their annual 7-a-side Amateur Rugby League Challenge at the John Charles Stadium (formerly South Leeds Stadium) on Saturday 30th June 2007.
The event attracted 10 sides from far and wide all vying for Rothwell District Lions Club's Invitation Knockout Shield, including last year's winners & beaten finalists Keighley Town & Sharlston Rovers. The teams were split into 2 groups of 5, with the winners and runners up of each group proceeding through to the semi-finals.
 Hunslet Warriors ran out worthy winners in Group 'A' closely followed by Latchford Albion (Warrington).
Group 'B' proved to be quite eventful with the Keighley Town v Queens game, in the latter stages of the group matches, being abandoned, resulting in both sides being disqualified from the rest of the competition for serious foul play.
This cleared the way for Wakefield Redoubt 'B' to join group winners Hunslet Old Boys in the semi's. The Warriors eventually overcame Redoubt 24-10 to join their close neighbours and rivals, Hunslet Old Boys in the final, who disposed of a tiresome Latchford Albion 26-0.
Who could have dreamt it..............Hunslet Warriors playing Hunslet Old Boys in the final at the home of Hunslet Hawks. With both sides suffering from fatigue it was the Warriors who took command with an inspirational performance by man-of-the-match James Milner. Despite this, the high standard of rugby was maintained right from game one through to the final. Even when the Old Boys came close to closing the gap, the Warriors seemed to step up a gear and eventually ran out winners 28-12.
    
Earlier in the day Hunslet Warriors' Aaron Niles scraped home in the 100m Champagne Sprint, a race with a representative from each side.
Prior to the semi-finals Oulton Raiders took on Hunslet Parkside in the under 12's Challenge Match. They were lead into the arena by Town Cryer Reg Levine. Both sides were a credit, not only to their clubs, but to the sport as well. The Raiders were victorious by 8 points to nil and had their number 8 Dillon Mortimer named man-of-the-match.
Rothwell District Lions Club President Joyce Taylor and Past District Governor Lion George Morgan performed the presentations throughout the day.
Annual Duck Race
at the Rothwell May Day Celebrations 2007
The Lions' Annual Duck Race took place during the Rothwell Entertainments Committee's May Day Celebrations on Monday 7th May 2007.
This was your opportunity to watch a couple of thousand little yellow plastic ducks race each other down the River Dolphin (beck) in Rothwell to give the winning 'owners' a substantial cash prize:
- 1st: £350 - 2783 - Maureen
- 2nd: £100 - 2577 - Townend
- 3rd: £50 - 2655 - Elaine Hill>
Riding for the Disabled
Rothwell District Lions Club’s President Joyce Taylor presents a cheque for £3,500 to Beverley Backhouse of ‘Riding for the Disabled’. The money will be used to purchase a horse to replace one, which is due to be retired. A replacement horse has already been found and is at present undergoing trials to test its temperament and suitability. If this is okay he will be called Bruno Lionheart.
Macmillan Cancer Support
New name (was Macmillan Cancer Relief), same old story.......... desperate for funding! Rothwell District Lions Club were only too happy to help. The Lions made a presentation of £2,500 from the proceeds of the ‘Wild Boar Challenge’ cycle ride, to Nikki Hawkins of Macmillan Cancer Support (see attached photo of Lion President Joyce Taylor & Nikki Hawkins).  ‘The President’s Project’, which, in the Lionistic year 2006/2007, Lion Joyce is supporting will be ‘Riding for the Disabled’ who are based in Middleton. The Lions have already pledged £1,000 and some of the monies from forthcoming events will also go to this very worthy cause. They are hoping to donate £3,000 in total, which is the amount needed for a new horse.
Martin House Hospice
 From part of the proceeds from the ‘Wild Boar Challenge’ cycle ride, Rothwell District Lions Club made a presentation of £2,500 to Amanda Carter of Martin House Hospice for Children (see attached photos of Lion President Joyce Taylor & Amanda and Amanda with the dolls house). The Lions also donated a dolls house, complete with furniture for them to auction at their forthcoming ball in Harrogate.  Rugby League Tournament
On Sunday 7th May the Lions are held a 7-a-side amateur rugby league tournament at South Leeds Stadium. In a well fought, good spirited, group stages Keighley Town and Sharlston Rovers came out winners of their respective groups, with Allerton Bywater and Lindley Swifts runners-up.Action from final the first semi-final saw Keighley Town cruise to a resounding victory by 20 points to nil over Lindley Swifts, whilst in the other semi-final, Sharlston Rovers overcame Allerton Bywater 18-4. Keighley Town came out on top in a hard fought final against Sharlston Rovers 16-6 to win the Rothwell District Lions Club Invitation Knockout Shield.
