About Rothwell Lions PDF Print E-mail

The Lions Club Motto is 'We Serve'. In the case of Rothwell District Lions, we serve and support our local community, organising and helping out at events such as the Rothwell Carnival, the annual May day Duck Race and we ran the Rothwell Park Bonfire for many years. Every December we escort Father Christmas on his sleigh visiting most homes in the area.

lionsantaAll these events are fun, and help to create a sense of community in Rothwell and the surrounding areas. When required we also become involved in larger scale work, such as raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Guide Dogs for the Blind and many other charities which help the wider community.

We meet every First and Third Tuesday of the Month at 8pm at the Innkeepers Lodge (formerly Holiday Inn Express), The Grove, Oulton (2mins from J30 M62). If you are interested in what we do - come along - you will be made to feel very welcome or contact us via this website or ring 0845 833 2765 (lo-call rate).

All Hunslet Final

at the home of Hunslet Hawks.

Rothwell District Lions Club held their annual 7-a-side Amateur Rugby League Challenge at the John Charles Stadium (formerly South Leeds Stadium) on Saturday 30th June 2007.

The event attracted 10 sides from far and wide all vying for Rothwell District Lions Club's Invitation Knockout Shield, including last year's winners & beaten finalists Keighley Town & Sharlston Rovers. The teams were split into 2 groups of 5, with the winners and runners up of each group proceeding through to the semi-finals.

HunsletWarriors Hunslet Warriors ran out worthy winners in Group 'A' closely followed by Latchford Albion (Warrington).

Group 'B' proved to be quite eventful with the Keighley Town v Queens game, in the latter stages of the group matches, being abandoned, resulting in both sides being disqualified from the rest of the competition for serious foul play.

This cleared the way for Wakefield Redoubt 'B' to join group winners Hunslet Old Boys in the semi's. The Warriors eventually overcame Redoubt 24-10 to join their close neighbours and rivals, Hunslet Old Boys in the final, who disposed of a tiresome Latchford Albion 26-0.

Who could have dreamt it..............Hunslet Warriors playing Hunslet Old Boys in the final at the home of Hunslet Hawks. With both sides suffering from fatigue it was the Warriors who took command with an inspirational performance by man-of-the-match James Milner. Despite this, the high standard of rugby was maintained right from game one through to the final. Even when the Old Boys came close to closing the gap, the Warriors seemed to step up a gear and eventually ran out winners 28-12.

Earlier in the day Hunslet Warriors' Aaron Niles scraped home in the 100m Champagne Sprint, a race with a representative from each side.

Prior to the semi-finals Oulton Raiders took on Hunslet Parkside in the under 12's Challenge Match. They were lead into the arena by Town Cryer Reg Levine. Both sides were a credit, not only to their clubs, but to the sport as well. The Raiders were victorious by 8 points to nil and had their number 8 Dillon Mortimer named man-of-the-match.

Rothwell District Lions Club President Joyce Taylor and Past District Governor Lion George Morgan performed the presentations throughout the day.
