Areas Covered Methley, Oulton, Woodlesford, John O'Gaunts, Rothwell, Carlton, Thorpe, Robin Hood and Lofthouse. Live at Home is also a service that encourages and enables older people to participate once again in their local community. The energy and commitment for each Live at Home scheme comes from local people. The scheme offers the following activities and services to any older person (60+) living within our funded area. To partake in the activities membership is essential and involves an informal chat with the Scheme Manager to complete a needs assessment and ascertain the individual's requirements. The Rothwell and District Live at Home Scheme is a local voluntary project, which offers friendship, activities and support to retired people over the age of 60 who live in their own homes. The scheme became operational in August 2000 and covers the Rothwell, Oulton. Woodlesford, Methley, Carlton, Robin Hood, Thorpe and Lofthouse areas. The scheme has two part-time paid members of staff and is dependent upon external funding from various sources for its continued existence and growth. Essential to our work is the help and support of our volunteers who give their time freely and generously and without whom we could not continue to provide our services. Volunteering with Rothwell & District Live at Home Scheme: Rothwell & District Live at Home Scheme greatly welcome new volunteers to help us deliver out services in the community. We accept volunteers of all ages - many of our volunteers are retired people themselves - and are therefore also able to join in all our activities. If you or some one you know would like an informal chat to discuss out volunteering opportunities further please contact Lesley or Janet on telephone number: 0113 2880887 or email us on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it The following quotation aptly describes the commitment of our 37 volunteers who support the scheme in a variety of roles: "Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world" Author: Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
We
said thank you to all our volunteers for regularly putting these words
into practice during Volunteer Week in June 2007 and had a ‘fun' award
ceremony to acknowledge their contribution and length of service to our
members. Membership At the time of our last Annual Report in April 2007 membership stood at 297, however as a result of referrals from health and social services, families and friends and directly from people attending our activities or who have heard about us by recommendation, we continue to grow and we have to date (Aug 2007) 315 members. Our members are involved with the provision of our services through representation on our Support Committee, through regular evaluation and satisfaction surveys and we are always interested to hear their views and suggestions. Befriending ServiceThere is a growing demand for this service and we currently have 11 people receiving a weekly visit from one of our volunteers. There has however, been a sharp rise in referrals for this service and we currently have 21 people waiting for a volunteer befriender. We are constantly seeking new volunteers to meet this demand and a visit of a few hours a week can make an enormous difference to someone who otherwise would have limited social contact. Scheme Newsletter Our membership and volunteers receive a quarterly newsletter by post, which contains information and advice and details of our trips and activities. Scheme Activities The 6 monthly evaluations by our members of our activities have shown a high level of satisfaction with all the activities: Gentle Exercise Class This chair-based exercise class continues to take place on Fridays at 2.00pm at Midland House sheltered housing scheme, Woodlesford. The class is well attended and very popular, with 16 to 20 members taking exercise each week. Graham, the class facilitator, creates varied and interesting chair based exercises to suit all abilities along with a great deal of camaraderie and laughter. It is wonderful to see the improvement in flexibility and agility of those who attend the classes regularly. The Line Dancing Sessions Held at 1.30pm on alternate Mondays at Woodlesford Parish Centre and the Scout Hut on Haigh Road, Rothwell, continue to be attended by 67 of our members from all age ranges. Sandra, the facilitator, creates a programme, which suits all abilities and is fun as well as good exercise. Seating is provided if dancers need a breather and our volunteers provide a welcome cup of tea/coffee and biscuits at ‘half time' or in the hot weather copious cold drinks to keep every-one hydrated.
Held on Tuesdays is a popular activity with our members. Our volunteers provide tea and coffee for members to meet and chat and provide a light lunch at 12.00pm, which is regularly attended by 20+ diners each week. ‘Movement to Music' A 'movement to music' session has also been introduced at 11.00am to run alongside the Drop-in for those who would like to get fit and have fun. Chair based and standing exercises cover a variety of abilities and new members are welcome. The Lunch Club
Held
on Thursdays at Mickletown Community Centre Methley has 24 regular
diners taking advantage of a 2 course cooked meal and good company. We
have welcomed new members this year and our volunteers create a
pleasant and convivial atmosphere for the diners.
Day trips "Thank you for a brilliant day out - again it's been lovely" quote from one of our members. The 6 monthly evaluations by our members of our activities have shown a high level of satisfaction with all the activities. Large Print Library Lending Club We are grateful to receive a steady supply of large print books from Rothwell Library, which are delivered on request to members by scheme staff. This service is much appreciated by members who would otherwise be unable to visit the Library.
