Carnival Day Success

The Rothwell & District Carnival Committee would like to thank everyone who helped make their fithumb_fire_eater.jpgrst summer carnival a great success.  The event held on Saturday 10th July was attended by 1000's of local residents who enjoyed a wide range of entertainment including circus skills presented by Surefire Circus, pupils from Royds singing songs from the shows, dance displays and a dog show presented by Walkabouthumb_fun_music.jpgt Hounds. Following the traditional fancy dress parade which this year included the West Yorkshire Fire Service Pipers, stilt walkers and over 100 local children the Carnival was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Jim McKenna, who awarded Rothwell Fun Music Group first prize in the fancy dress parade.  In addition to the arena entertainment, community stalls,  go-karts, a bouncy castle, a market area along with the traditional fun fair help provide a fun filled afternoon.  The event came to a close following the grand prize draw where the lucky first prize winner of £150.00 was Mrs D Smith from Stanley with the second prize of £75.00 been won by Mr Crabtree of Rothwell.  Third prize - a £50 voucher for Salutes was won by Luke Willey from Woodlesford.  A full list of all the prizes and winners will be displayed in thumb_strawberry.jpgBlackburn Hall from Friday 23rd June or you can request an emailed copy of the winners list from Debra at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  .  The Carnival Committee would also like to thank all the local businesses who donated raffle prizes and thank Morrisons supermarket who supported the event by donating  a large amount of strawberries which were sold by the committee to help raise funds. Following the success of the Carnival the R&DCC are now planning their next event - watch this space for further updates! In the meantime if you have any suggestions or ideas please email Debra at the above email address or come along to the Carnival Committee meetings held on the first Monday in every month at the One Stop Shop, Rothwell.

A History of Rothwell Entertainments PDF Print E-mail

Rothwell has a long history of fine entertainment.

In 1408, King Henry IV (son of John O'Gaunt of Rothwell) decreed that Rothwell should have two fairs per year, one in the month of July. Almost 600 years later, this still happens. May Day celebrations are held every May Day bank holiday and the Rothwell Carnival always takes place on the second Saturday in July.

The picture on the right (supplied by Mrs Homer) shows the Queen, Janet Homer (nee Edwards) being crowned by Mrs Gwen Turner at the Gala in 1939. Maid of Honour was Joyce Brooksbank and the Page Boy with the blonde hair is Ronald Whitehead. The previous Queen in the top right is Evelyn Nunns. Janet and some of the others were from the Church School whilst the others were from the Council School.
