RDCC at Christmas Fayre & Lights switch on
Rothwell & District Carnival Committee would like to thank all those people who visited our stalls at the Christmas Lights Switch On in Rothwell on 27 November and the Christmas Fayre at Blackburn Hall on 28 November.
Over the two days we ran a number of fund raising activities including:
- Guess the Name of the Bear (the bear was called Colin and was won by Abigail)
- Guess the Weight of the Cake – very kindly donated by Sheena Kellet and won by Mrs A Maiden.
- A 12 Days of Christmas Treasure Trail. The three lucky winners were:
- Georgia Gomersal who won a chocolate advent calendar
- Jack Clifford who chose the Giant Cracker and
o Lucy Thorpe who won the Selection Box
Congratulations to all of our winners and it’s not too late for you to take part and help us to raise funds – we will be arranging a number of events in the
coming months and hope to see as many people there as possible.
Walking Treasure hunt now on
In the meantime there is a walking Treasure Hunt competition underway. Entry forms cost 50p each and can be bought from Olwyn Fox’s in Commercial Street Rothwell. These need to be completed and returned to Olwyn Fox’s by 12pm on Christmas Eve. The Treasure Hunt is simply a short walk around Rothwell solving the clues we have put together. It doesn’t take long and is something all the family can enjoy.
The winner will be chosen at random from the correct entries after Christmas and notified by phone. The prize is a £20 gift card for the cinema at Xscape. Good Luck to those that enter!
Keep in touch!
Many of you will have been given a copy (or two!) or our fliers over the weekend and will be aware of how to get in touch with us. We welcome all suggestions, offers of help and sponsorship. Our meetings are help monthly – the dates will be published on this website.
If you want to mail us we can be contacted here .
Until the next update and the next event we wish you all a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.

A History of Rothwell Entertainments |
|
|
|
Rothwell has a long history of fine entertainment.
In 1408, King Henry
IV (son of John O'Gaunt of Rothwell) decreed that
Rothwell should have two fairs per year, one in the month
of July. Almost 600 years later, this still happens. May
Day celebrations are held every May Day bank holiday and
the Rothwell Carnival always takes place on the second
Saturday in July.
1939
The picture on the right

Edwards) being crowned by Mrs Gwen Turner at the Gala in 1939.
Maid of Honour was Joyce Brooksbank and the Page Boy with
the blonde hair is Ronald Whitehead. The previous Queen in
the top right is Evelyn Nunns. Janet and some of the
others were from the Church School whilst the others were
from the Council School.

The Children's Day Queen of 1957 was Margaret Bateman (nee

1990 to 2009
The "Rothwell Entertainments committee" was in operation between
1990 and 2009. The Rothwell Gala as the current carnival is
commonly known has been in happening for at least a
century in or around Springhead Park in Rothwell.
Todays Carnival
In October 2009 the old entertainments committee having stood down there was a hand over of responsibilities to a new reconstituted group called "Rothwell & District Carnival Committee.
